There are two specific examples from You’ve Got Mail where Joe Fox (as NY152) inspires Kathleen Kelly (as Shopgirl) to have courage. Interestingly, both incidents occur through the written messages he sends her.
First, when she asks him about how to save her business, he advises her, “Go to the mattresses”. He further explains she is at war, and she must fight to the death. She acts on his advice and gets all kinds of favorable media attention for her small book store. Her friend writes an article on her behalf, she is seen on television, and there are picketers in front of her store. The entire drama is played out on the primetime evening news, where she is made to look very favorable in comparison to Joe, who comes across as very heartless. Throughout the entire drama, he continues to admonish her to have courage.
The Lord also expects us to have courage. The first chapter of Joshua repeats the directive to be courageous several times.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This is echoed by Jesus himself:
“Do not be afraid. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Why is Jesus so concerned with us having courage? Because we have work to do for Him that will require it.
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Jesus gives us courage, and He reveals what He wants us to do with it.
Stay tuned faithful readers, part 2 of courage is next!
